India runs one of the largest management-education systems in the world. For the 2026 session, AICTE and the university regulators between them approve over 5,500 management institutes offering the MBA or PGDM, with a combined intake of roughly 4.5 lakh seats.
Those seats span the 21 IIMs, central and state universities, autonomous private institutes and deemed-to-be universities — alongside the NLUs for law, NIFT and NID for design, and the IHMs for hotel management. Admission to most postgraduate management programmes is driven by a handful of national entrance tests: above all CAT, with XAT, NMAT, SNAP and CMAT close behind.
